What's it like

In Venice, right now.

Venice in full summer swelter — 30°C, the canals shimmering, the gondoliers half-melted under their hats. A few light showers are possible later. Stick to shaded calli, drink ombras, and save San Marco for early morning before the crowds and the heat collide.

Common questions

When is the best time to visit Venice?
April-June and September-October. May has perfect light and reasonable crowds. Avoid July-August (hot, crowded, expensive) and November-January (acqua alta season).
What is acqua alta?
Periodic high-water flooding, mostly October-January, when winds and tides push the Adriatic into the lagoon. The city handles it with elevated wooden walkways. Check tide forecasts during winter visits.
Is Venice sinking?
Yes, slowly, plus sea levels rising. The MOSE flood barrier project now protects against extreme tides. But Venice on a normal day is in no immediate danger.
How long do you need in Venice?
Minimum 2 nights. Day-trippers see San Marco at peak crowding and miss the magic, which appears after dark when day-tour groups leave.
