Common questions

What animals can you see on the Grasslands cam?
The stars are the plains bison, reintroduced to Grasslands National Park after being absent for over a century. The cameras, set up with Parks Canada and explore.org, watch herds near a watering hole and in the backcountry where cows calve in spring. You may also spot pronghorn, coyotes, prairie dogs, and birds of prey. Spring (May-June) is calving season and among the most active times to watch.
What's the weather like at Grasslands National Park?
Grasslands has a dry, extreme prairie climate in southern Saskatchewan. Summers are hot — often 25-35°C — with intense sun, big winds, and dramatic thunderstorms. Winters are bitterly cold, regularly below -20°C, with snow and biting wind across the open land. It's one of the driest regions in Canada. The weather is a spectacle in itself: enormous skies, fast-moving storms, and the constant prairie wind, all visible on the live cam.
Where is the Grasslands bison cam located?
The cameras are in Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan, Canada, right on the border with Montana. The park protects one of the last large areas of undisturbed mixed-grass prairie in North America. The cams sit in the West Block — one near a watering hole along the EcoTour road, another in remote backcountry. It's also a designated Dark Sky Preserve, so the night views can be remarkable.
Is Grasslands a good place to see the night sky?
Exceptionally so. Grasslands National Park is one of the darkest Dark Sky Preserves in Canada, far from any city lights. On clear nights the Milky Way is brilliant, and the prairie's flat horizon gives an unobstructed dome of stars. While the live cams focus on wildlife by day, the park's reputation for stargazing is a major draw — and the clear, dry prairie air makes for some of the best night skies on the continent.
